This has been a big year for our lake with major steps forward in research and bi-national policy coordination.  There is still much to be done both scientifically and also to see the IJC process through to completion and establishment of a watershed board and water quality objectives for our lake.

We have made significant progress on our objective to protect and sustain Lake of the Woods’ water quality for generations to come. This would not have been possible without the generous support of many individuals, lake families, firms and communities in the watershed.

The International Joint Commission Reference from Canada and the United States of America is focusing bi-national attention on our lake and watershed. We are close to achieving a permanent international water pollution board for the Lake of the Woods watershed, through the IJC. Initial research has been completed, including the State of the Basin Report and the Phosphorus Budget Study. We have built partnerships among governments, universities and the Foundation to work together to ensure the future health and protection of our lake and its watershed.

The IJC Reference, the science projects and the building of inter-agency partnerships are all significant achievements. However, this was the beginning of a process. Restoring and protecting Lake of the Woods water quality will require long-term commitments of governments. It will also require continued efforts of our Foundation to ensure that Lake of the Woods remains a priority focus and that partnerships continue to be fostered and coordinated.

The efforts and support of so many have been instrumental to the successes detailed in the 2011 Report. Thank you very much to all our supporters for what you have done over the years to help us in our efforts to protect and restore the Lake of the Woods for generations to come.
